Hey, What’s up everybody? Anton here from Performance Marketer. I’m standing outside of the Apple store in Chelsea and, what’s funny, is that right outside they have another vendor selling cell phone cases. So, outside of a store that’s making hundreds of millions of sales, they have another vendor selling 7 dollar cases. So, what’s the story?

This is Marketing 101: This guy is selling cell phone cases for the iPhone 5, 6 and 7 and he’s going exactly where his customers are. He is literally standing in front of one of the largest Apples stores in the entire world. So how does this apply to us as digital marketers? Just like him, we want to get our messaging, and our products, in front our ideal customers. Typically, what people do when they first start to brain storm who they are going to be selling to, is try to figure out where those customers are. This is just the most literal sense of being where the customers are: they just bought a cell phone and they came out to the other vendor.

How does this apply to us? Let’s say that your company builds tools that help ecommerce people sell more: they help eCommerce businesses get better results. You are going to want to have your tool listed with Shopify, BigCommerce, Volusion, Magento and with every big ecommerce player. How do you do this? All of these websites have different directories: some of them call them their partner listings and some of them have app stores where you could have your plugin or integration listed. Of course, this is never going to be as easy as standing outside of the store that your customers come from but we can still connect with them, we can still be that close and we can have that kind of relationship. If your business is ecommerce based, and they’ve signed up to Shopify and are looking for a way to make their store better: right away you are there. Same as if they buy an IPhone, walk out of the store and want a case, you are right there. If someone signs up for BigCommerce, wants something to make their new online store better, and you are in their app store: boom, they get you right away.

So, I hope that makes sense guys. When I saw that guy out there, so close to that store, it just made me think. How can we get closer to our customers at the right time? How can we be directly in front them? Being an online business guide I do nothing offline so I always try to find what’s working best and how to put that into our own businesses. Since there is no way we can just stand somewhere and have a physical presence this is my best comparison of how we can do it digitally and online. Get listed in app stores, get listed as a partner, become part of your community with the big players and you will get their customers – just like this guy gets Apple’s customers when they walk out the door.
